There are several ways for you to help the Project if you want to.
Primarily, we need people willing to breed their own Cocker Spaniel to a Papillon. This would be under the guidance of the Project, and we would give you as much support as you wanted with information about breeding and whelping, selecting the stud dog, and finding homes for the puppies. If you have a Cocker Spaniel that has a good temperament and which you would be happy to health test for familial nephropathy (DNA test costing around £60), prcd-PRA (DNA test costing around £130) and hip displasia (around £35), and you wish to be a part of the Project, please get in touch for more information.
Once we have this first generation on the ground, we will need puppy-buyers who would be willing to breed their pup if it grows into an adult that would be an asset to the project. The Cocker/Papillon crosses are expected to be small (but not tiny, somewhere in between the size of the two parent breeds), active and affectionate, obedient and intelligent, and of course, healthy. Those whose mother is a working Cocker Spaniel would make good pets for active homes, perhaps for agility, and those whose mother is a show strain Cocker would make calmer pets. There will be a stringent application process in place if you want a Project pup.
If you do not want to get involved with breeding, we always need moral support! This is a controversial plan, and one that will draw criticism from those who value breed purity over the health and wellbeing of dogs.
