The Cavalier Recreation Project aims to re-start the cavalier breed with a healthier, broader gene pool to stop the suffering.

Ethics of the Project

  • The priorities when planning any litter are firstly health, then temperament, then conformation.
  • Coefficient of inbreeding of all litters must be 6.25% or less over ten generations.
  • All dogs and bitches will be health tested for all relevant concerns before breeding.
  • Breeders will have responsibility for any puppy they breed for the whole of its life, and will always take it back and assist with its rehoming.
  • Homing puppies to be done with all possible care to ensure a good home for the life of the dog.
  • Breeding bitches and dogs to be kept in the house, exercised regularly and given all necessary veterinary treatment.
  • Bitches to be bred only every other season unless there are extreme circumstances necessitating a single back to back mating.
  • Bitches not to be bred before 2 years old or after 6 years old.
  • Stud dogs only to sire a maximum of 5 litters in their lifetimes.
  • There will always be an open registry to prevent the downward spiral of inbreeding.
